Overview

Ruckus Wireless is a company known for it’s sleek modems and routers. When I was approached to do this project in collaboration with Lextech, I knew it was going to be one of the tougher projects I had worked on from a UX perspective. Ruckus was wanting a way for a network admin to manage their network via a mobile app on tablet or mobile phone. They wanted a way to see high-level diagnostics if you were running multiple access points on a large corporate network or a small network in your home. Suffice to say, I had a crash course in networking to figure the best UX path.

Dashboard

The main dashboard of the app needed to have identical functionality whether on tablet or phone. If the network had several access points and connected clients, they would need to see all of those on this dashboard, so I chose to go with a horizontal scroll to allow the users to swipe left and right in each individual section to view additional access points and clients. They could also drill down by tapping on an access point or client to view the detailed diagnostics.

Custom Icons

I illustrated custom icons representing the various Ruckus Wireless router types.

The End Result

By the conclusion of designing the UX and UI for this app, I learned a lot about networking. Though the idea of creating an app to manage your network is not a new one, Ruckus wanted something that gave admins a lot more control over their networks and a lot more details on the diagnostics of their network. This could have made the app a cluster to navigate, but I think what I achieved was something that is easy to use and flexible.
